View of Par 4 10th from the tee

Crow Wood Golf Club is situated to the North of Glasgow, first left off the A80 immediately after the end of the M80 Stepps bypass heading towards Stirling.

The tree-lined, flat parkland course, designed by James Braid, was formed in 1925 on the acquisition of part of the grounds of Garnkirk Estate, along with the 18th century Mansion House.

Although the Mansion House was later sold and the new owner rebuilt it from the foundations up in 1937, it was re-acquired in 1955 and converted to our present clubhouse. There have been several changes to the building since then, although the beautiful oak panelling remains unaltered.

Whilst most of the holes use more or less the original layout, additional ground was acquired in the 1930's on which the current 6th to 9th holes are built. This stretched the course by some 600 yards to its current length of 6,168 yards from the Gents' Medal Tees.

The course is relatively flat parkland and both professionals and top-class amateurs find it a fair test of their ability, particularly on some of the longer Par 4's. Most holes are tree-lined with oak, birch and pine. The Garnkirk Burn also winds its way through the middle part of the course, making the 6th and 7th holes testing depending on which way the wind is blowing. On a sunny day there are magnificent views of the Campsie Hills, with Ben Lomond in the background.  Pictures from around the course.

Read a very enlightening hole-by-hole account of the course written by Gerry Gay of the BBC.

The current course record of 62 was achieved by Dean Robertson whilst still an amateur and a copy of his scorecard is on display in the trophy cabinet.

Remarkably, during the second world war, the course remained open and playable thanks mainly to the efforts of our stalwart ladies section who took over the management and maintenance of the course. To this day our lady members benefit from their efforts as post-war, to reward their achievement, it was written into our constitution that all ladies be entitled to full membership with equal voting rights.
